Colourisation Procedure
Photographers and artists have been colourising photographs from the early days of photography. Prior to the development of colour photography there was no choice but to use ink to colour the images and pen or pencil to add sharpening and contrast. Now we use computer applications, but the task still requires the skills of an artist. Our colour specialists will render your black & white or sepia photo in a colour style that best suits the era and subject matter.
Damaged Photographs:
If your photograph is damaged, we will provide you with two quotes; one for the colourisation and an additional quote that includes the cost of repairing the damage. Damaged prints, negatives or transparencies each have their own characteristics, but all can be repaired.
Common problems are:
Tears, Creases and Scratches
due to mishandling
Mould
due to poor storage
Foxing
due to the acid inherent in older paper
Oxidization
due to prolonged contact with humid air
Light Fading
due to prolonged exposure to sunlight
Dark Fading
due to temperature, humidity and chemical contamination
Water Damage
due to mishandling
Scanning Methods:
The methods that you employ when scanning your photograph can influence the quality of the image that you send to us and therefore ultimately affect the quality of the image that you receive from us.
If we judge that your image can be scanned in a more appropriate manner then we may ask you to re-scan your material. We will advise you on the best methods to employ when scanning certain types of photographs, particularly those that are damaged or of a very old type. This will ensure that your colourised photograph is going to be of the highest quality.
Postal Option:
If you are unable to achieve an adequate scan due to the condition of your photograph or the limitations of your equipment, then you can use our postal service to send the material to us. (A common problem with many older photographs is that the silver within the emulsion of the print reflects the light of the scanner and prevents you from obtaining a high quality scan).
If you wish to use our postal service, please enter your email address in the box below and you will receive full instructions and advice on how best to send us your photographic material by post.
We accept photographic material in any form: Slides, Negatives, Prints, Glass Plates etc.
